I have the same problem with totally different hardware (IBM R40 laptop with DVD-ROM). With kernel 2.6.27-11 the DVD-ROM doesn't recognised.
With kerel 2.6.24-23 everything works fine. Somebody else have the same problem, reported in ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1003447 (I also updated from 8.04 to 8.10.
