Confirmed with ATI Radeon 9600XT on an older Athlon XP PC. After a few minutes with composing (effects) enabled either: 1) screen and keybord freeze; or 2) the above with the screen also going black; or 3) the above with the screen going black but a cursor present
in the last case (and only in that) it is possible to reboot the machine with ctrl-alt-del. System was showing a similar (but minor issue) also with the free radeon drivers on intrepid (Xorg going in an infinite loop), but in that case the system remained responsive from the network.
