I was having this issue while the plug-in MusicTracker was installed. Thinking back to this issue, the problem started after MusicTracker right after was installed and resolved itself after MusicTracker was removed.
Please investigate toward this plug in as there are other bugs which may be related...search musictracker -- Cannot connect to Yahoo! servers in Pidgin.
