It's "freeware" however I don't see any source code available to compile
it myself, I tried running the download however there are problems
because it's looking for a dependency in the wrong place (I already have
it installed). This kind of thing could be avoided if I have the ability
to compile it myself. If the source code is available then great,
however I only see a binary.

With that being said, with only a binary it's going to be a complete
pain to maintain this thing. I suggest you go to the author and convince
him or her to release the source code under any license they like then
put in a request to package it in Debian (then add the request status
here). When Debian adds it, Ubuntu will pull it from Debian when they
next take a snapshot of unstable.
