Phil, thank you so much! That solves the problem for me too. I can't understand why, because it was happening with photos imported since I upgraded to Jaunty.
I still get the problem that when I set a rotated photo as a desktop background, it shows up wrongly oriented. This happens even for a fresh user, so it's not a problem with my config.
