** Description changed:

I see this with under mythbuntu 8.10 (fresh install and with current updates)
on an nvidia 8400GS card on an Asus P5QL-E board with the nvidia 180 driver
when installed via envyng
  Some investigations at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6777316
If the 180 driver is installed via the Restricted Drivers Manager, it doesn't
drop back to the text screen but still hangs with a blank screen.
The 173 and 177 drivers also don't drop back to the text screen and hang with
a blank screen.
