Very similar to a problem I'm experiencing with my Samba server, also running 64-bit 8.10. My error message is:
kernel: [3990168.499988] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [kswapd0:188] This has happened twice, both times preceded by more than 1 month of up time. System is a Dell Vostro 410N (dual-core Intel). The first time the problems occurred more or less at the same time the system was backing up (using rdiff-backup) to an attach USB drive. The second time occurred while the system was transferring files via rsync to another server. So in both cases there was an additional process doing I/O while the Samba server was running (usually Samba is the only service the system runs). -- Ubuntu Intrepid BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s!
