Public bug reported:

The Jaunty release candidate does not seem to be setting the system to
use my monitor correctly. I have a Dell Inspirion 530N that I bought
from Dell with Ubuntu installed already and have not had a problem with
screen resolution until Jaunty (worked well with 7.10, 8.04, and 8.10).
The system has a Nvidia GeForce 8600GT connected to a ViewSonic VX2025wm
monitor.

Jaunty would only allow low resolution of 640x480 during install which I
thought would be remedied after installing the Nvidia drivers through
Jaunty's hardware detection/driver feature. Also, I could not use the
"Install Ubuntu" option from the CD as the system locked. Instead, to
install I had to use the "Try Ubuntu..." function to install.

After install, the screen flashes several times and finally displays an
error dialogue of:

"The following error was encountered. You may need to update your
configuration to resolve this.

(EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."

I then go through a series of other error message windows and prompts
regarding the low resolution and am finally able to login using 640x480.

After installing all the available updates and the recommended Nvidia
drivers, the problem will not go away.

Here is what is in my xorg.conf file:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I tried running the command "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg",
but this did not fix the problem.

As I said, this problem did not exist in prior versions of Ubuntu. The
system is "clean" so I have no problem reinstalling or attempting
whatever troubleshooting efforts are needed.
