I appreciate that we have a semi-successful workaround with rootdelay,
but does anyone really find adding one or more minutes to your boot time
an acceptable solution?

In my case, the device in question is a 3ware hardware RAID.  This
didn't happen with older kernels / ubuntu releases, which leads me to
believe that a solution must exist that doesn't involve artificial
delays.
