I ran the remove and install commands to resolve this issue, and I'm no longer staring at the Update Manager Icon, which is good. However, remove uninstalled much more than just acroread, including mozilla- acroread, which I was led to believe was useful for browsing PDFs online.
I tried reinstalling it later, but it's no longer in the repos. Is mozilla-acroread obsolete now? What about all of the other removed files?
