This issue (maintenance shell "control-D") is gone with the updated
kernel from the download site... over-reported "kernel error upon
upgrade" stems from my ignorance of the need to remount the SD-card for
kernel upgrade... duh... ;-)

Now I just need to hunt down a way to restart the SD slot...
