This is still happening on this system as of 15 July 2006. Sound is rarely if ever enabled when the laptop is booted directly into Linux when turned on. However if XP is run first, it is enabled. All that is necessary is to turn the system on, select XP in the Grub boot menu, and reboot from the XP login screen without logging in.
