I've tried this with Jaunty live, and besides the fact that yet again the ALSA configuration and restart has changed in new and exciting ways, it still doesn't seem to work quite right.
Now, with Januty, we've got /etc/init.d/alsa-utils, which is supposed to start and stop the cards (but doesn't provide status anymore). On the live DVD, "/etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop" has no apparent effect (aside from putting the mixer on mute). The sound kernel modules remain loaded, so I'm assuming that the mixer state (and additional configuration parameters) don't get saved and reloaded.
