@Leprechaun: There must be more to it than that, because I see exactly the same options for openvpn in the 'ps' output for openvpn, but with a *working* redirect.
As has been mentioned in some previous comments, I found that setting the option "Ignore automatically obtained routes" sets the local route correctly. It appears as if the sense of this option has been reversed.
