By way of an update on that...

not running any dns caching (nscd, dnsmasq, pdnsd, bind9)
disabled firefox's built in dns caching 
(http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-555-disabling-the-dns-cache-of-mozilla-firefox)
manually specified the dns server (TPG .au)
also tried name servers from opendns.com

Not surprisingly this slows things down in general (so I assume its
worked).  However I still can't view my linkedin contacts list or invite
new contacts.  I can at least login now - but its certainly not a
solution.

No idea what to look at next :-?
