Hi there. I experienced this as well. There seems to be AUDIT errors in Xorg.0.log right after a crash, which I am not sure are related. I will attach an example.
While discussing this matter with crdlb in the compiz #, he suggested that replace the compiz "composer" by metacity's composer in gconf's editor key "/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager". That reduced the ammount of lockups. He warns that this is not a proper workaround though because metacity's composer wont take advantage of OpenGL rendering. I post it here so it might lead to a better solution.
