Hi E-B what do you mean by "for debian"? The latest feisty package is version 0.57.11.1ubuntu2 and version 0.57.8 was released for Ubuntu Dapper.
The core file is usually left in the current directory I think, probably in your home directory or in the /root directory. have you got a synaptics crash file in /var/crash ?
