Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

I have a machine which is part of a NIS domain and where home
directories are mounted via NFS.

The only local users are the system account created by ubuntu and the
various packages installed (e.g. apache, mysql) plus the first account
created when I installed the system.

I usually administer users with adduser or simply editing /etc/passwd
and /etc/group with vi. Both files (and /etc/shadow) have the usual
"+::..." entries at the end for NIS.

However, today I launched users-admin from the system/administration
menu. It didn't even show the local first account. I pressed "unlock"
and entered my password (I was logged in with a NIS account) and it
still wasn't showing anything.

I opened the files with less in a terminal and to my dismay, they only
had the entry for root (in fact, it even had a password in /etc/shadow
which I never had enabled) and the entry for NIS.

All the other entries were gone.

There seems to be some mean interaction between users-admin and NIS...
