It is caused by compiz, when you disable it you won't have this issue anymore. It seems not to be limited to firefox or opera. In my case I have also this issue with rythmbox. I don't have it under gedit or openoffice.
I have this issue on my samsung NC10 and also on a desktop computer with an NVIDIA 7300GS graphic card.
