I have attempted to recreate this problem on my system. The first time I scanned an image I used xsane version 0.991 setting of line art. The image was poor quality. The second scan I did was in color and appears to be good.
The system that I used to test against the above issue was Kubuntu 7.04 fiesty. As of Sun, 7 Jan 2007 07:56:00 -0600 I believe all updates have been applied.
