I can confirm that when changing kaffeine to use 'alsa' instead of 'auto' (pulseaudio) as suggested, I no longer observe the problem. There is a bit of delay between hitting the pause button and it actually pausing, presumably due to the length of the audio buffer, but this is not a serious problem. Kaffeine is now usable again. Should this bug be assigned to pulseaudio instead of kaffeine?
