It happened again this morning. Eventually everything locked up (I
couldn't even ssh in) although I didn't get a full kernel panic in the
sense of a flashing caps lock light.

I'm now on the 2.6.28-11.40 kernel.

Both times this has happened I tried to open a new tab in firefox.
Firefox eventually went grey. This last time, I tried unsuccessfully to
kill its process with a kill -9 command. Then I tried to sudo kill it
and gnome-terminal just sat there (it never got as far as prompting for
a password). Then X froze up completely. Then I tried ssh from another
PC but there was no response.
