Seems that this is an issue of SCIM configuration: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2531066&group_id=108454&atid=650539 Indeed, killing all SCIM processes stops this behavior. Changing GTK_IM_MODULE from 'xim' as it was for me to 'scim-bridge' with im-switch -s scim-bridge made the issue disappear.
