worked for me. And I really don't know where the system is getting those
default greyish GNOME icons... :?

The icon themes that work are the ones that were installed with
Synaptic. *ALL* themes installed either manually or with the
System/Preferences/Art Manager do have the inode-directory issue, like
reported by Ansus above.
