Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer
The Edgy server install CD by default installs the "linux-image-server" kernel that is compiled for i686, even on i586 systems that do not support i686 instructions. In my case, the processor model was AMD K6. The result was that the system always rebooted when loading the kernel. The problem was fixed by installing the "linux-image-386" kernel (booting from rescue CD). It would be nice if the install CD checked the processor architecture, and installed an appropriate kernel. This problem may be a show-stopper for people with old hardware and little experience. I am not sure whether this problem exists also for the desktop CD. ** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Installs i686 kernel also on i586 -> does not boot https://launchpad.net/bugs/78071 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
