I have recently tried the Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 binary from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html - so far the problem has not recurred. (However, I am using a 32-bit build on a 64-bit machine, and some of the plugins such as Flash are disabled.)
