I am downloading source of xserver-xorg-video-intel and will poke around the code a little bit. I will try to set watchpoints. I am a C++ programmer, but I rarely use debuggers, that's just the way I am. Nevertheless, I think that this situation is ripe for forwarding the info upstream.
