Do you tried CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch to console and CTRL+ALT+F7 to switch back? After that my Dell Inspiron 9600 + Nvidia + desktop effects worked again. It seems to be a problem with the nvidia driver + desktop effects. It appears every time I use a "Fn + some_fn_key" on my laptop like increase or decrease sound volume.
