I have the same problem with my kubuntu 9.04 beta1 32-bit, but it seems to be a problem with the nvidia driver. I have geforce 7300 and I use ext4 as well, but when I disable the nvidia-drivers I have no problems at all. I will try to install the 64-bit version to see how that is working.
