The failsafe mode did allow me to analyse the error and see the log
files. So presumably, we know that the HW is in a bad state as shown by
the Xorg.0.log from that particular bug:

(WW) intel(0): PRB0_CTL (0x0001f001) indicates ring buffer enabled
(WW) intel(0): PRB0_HEAD (0x7341d4dc) and PRB0_TAIL (0x0001d638) indicate ring 
buffer not flushed
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.
Error in I830WaitLpRing(), timeout for 2 seconds

What was interesting to me is the fact that the graphics HW was still
capable of running is some low-res mode (framebuffer?). So perhaps it
wasn't completely unrecoverable after all?
