Try this...

Go to a terminal window.

type :
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Gnome Display Manager will stop

type:
irw

and press buttons on your remote.
This should reveal whether it's other drivers that are loaded in gnome that
are causing the problem.

If you are able to get it to work OK, then maybe I can make another
suggestion
