I just found a way to get the lid switch to work under certain
conditions!

It's slightly bizarre and quite ironic.

Do a hibernation and then start up from hibernation. That made the lid
switch work in jaunty beta.

It also made the /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state change as expected.
Before the hibernation it was always "open".

Can anyone confirm my findings? I did this on my trusty HP Compaq
nc8000.
