*blush* I should've read the help text more thoroughly. It clearly states that the network folder must be mounted locally before digikam will read it.
(For others stumbling into the same darkness: install 'smbfs' and do sudo mount.cifs //box/pics /mnt/pics) So while there is no smb bug in digikam, the source of my confusion remains (and this could be improved): digikam should not silently strip the smb:// url, but display a warning like "note that remote urls are not supported." So while the original problem is moot, I still feel that this is a bug. Sorry for the fuzz.
