Could this be due to an IRQ conflict?

I just replaced a 3Com network card with a Realtek one. The 3Com was
eth1 and configured in /etc/network/interfaces. The Realtek was named
eth0. When I tried to bring it up with ifconfig it gave me the "invalid
argument" message and it didn't work. I tried setting hwaddress in
interfaces (because I noticed that the MAC address was
00:00:00:00:00:00), but that didn't help. Then I moved it to another PCI
slot. It got named eth2 and now ifconfig works. I replaced eth1 with
eth2 in /etc/network/interfaces and everything is fine.
