The prospect of, flip a bios bit, boot CD, repeat for all bits seems
rather daunting.

On the assumption that it was an Intrepid post-install nastiness with some 
software MIT integrated, I used biosdecode, dmidecode, dumpCmos and dumpSmbios 
to take
a snapshot of as much BIOS state as I could, and then did pretty much the same 
install I did that seemed to get me into this state of affairs.

Well, the wipe and install went fine with no HPET problems.

I did touch a couple BIOS settings, Changing boot order, and enabling
PXE, but those changes didn't provoke any HPET problems.

It is as if Dell, after installing the software, set some BIOS value
different from what one gets when does "Load BIOS Defaults", and that
THAT is the root of the problem.
