The prospect of, flip a bios bit, boot CD, repeat for all bits seems rather daunting.
On the assumption that it was an Intrepid post-install nastiness with some software MIT integrated, I used biosdecode, dmidecode, dumpCmos and dumpSmbios to take a snapshot of as much BIOS state as I could, and then did pretty much the same install I did that seemed to get me into this state of affairs. Well, the wipe and install went fine with no HPET problems. I did touch a couple BIOS settings, Changing boot order, and enabling PXE, but those changes didn't provoke any HPET problems.
