I confirm this is a nasty "intentional" bug.

I understand the benefits of using UUID over /dev entries, but leaving a
system unbootable after upgrade is way to much.

now, the user has to manually edit the grub entries to boot, and
manually edit menu.lst, and forget about update-grub.

any bug leaves the system unbootable is critical to me.
