This bug is causing data loss so should be taken seriously. I've logged https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-notifier/+bug/348469 on a hunch (different package but maybe explains cause).
I know Jaunty just hit Beta and is almost out the door, but I believe this is serious.
