@Erich: You're could be right that it's not the same bug. It seems that I glossed over the part where the original poster said that they were unable to switch to a VT using Ctrl+Alt+F2 (although they contradict themselves in their first reply, which is where I probably based my reply upon). The symptoms were very similar to what I was experiencing (the GUI "locking up", but still allowing the impression of receiving mouse button presses, as well as being able to restore functionality via a switch to a VT), but in my case a fix was released a while ago, so if it's the same bug it should already be fixed for you (or is available via update).
