I have no idea if this is related at all, please forgive me if it is not.
I had the same symptoms as you (Casey) described them in this bug description, 
the other bug and in the forum thread. I finally was able to track it down to 
the NetworkManager.
Disabling the NetworkManager like described here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager?action=show&redirect=WifiDocs%2FNetworkManager#Disabling%20NetworkManager

allowed me to log in. After logging in and starting the NetworkManager
in a terminal by hand triggered the kernel panic again.

Please let me know if you need more information and if yes, what
information.
