I just tried the suggestion from here,

basically, to load the USB2 driver before the USB1 (I think...) and it worked!  
At least so far, copying files to/from my same 16GB flash-drive are now 
full-speed and error-free.

FYI
I only did the first step:
- Add to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules:
    ehci_hcd

I did not make any change to my kernel init.
