I just tried the suggestion from here, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/88746/comments/500 basically, to load the USB2 driver before the USB1 (I think...) and it worked! At least so far, copying files to/from my same 16GB flash-drive are now full-speed and error-free.
