I also experience this under 8.10 on a Toshiba Tecra M6 (same kernel,
same sound device). I get no sound unless I turn everything to max, put
earphones on, and listen very closely. I knew about the problem with
sound when dual-booting on this machine, but recently purchased a new
hard drive (with no windows installed on it) and can now not get my
sound up.

I tried adding each of these lines to my alsa-base file, but so far with
no success:

options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
options snd-hda-intel model=basic
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel index=0

FWIW, my output from `aplay -l` is:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

And my audio device as reported in `sudo lspci -vv` is:

I am on 8.10. Sound was working fine till yesterday and after reboot, sound is
very very low. It had happened last time and only reinstalling ubuntu fixed it.
