I also experience this under 8.10 on a Toshiba Tecra M6 (same kernel, same sound device). I get no sound unless I turn everything to max, put earphones on, and listen very closely. I knew about the problem with sound when dual-booting on this machine, but recently purchased a new hard drive (with no windows installed on it) and can now not get my sound up.
I tried adding each of these lines to my alsa-base file, but so far with no success: options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba options snd-hda-intel model=basic options snd-hda-intel model=auto options snd-hda-intel model=3stack options snd-hda-intel index=0 FWIW, my output from `aplay -l` is: **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 And my audio device as reported in `sudo lspci -vv` is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems Device 0001 Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx- Latency: 0, Cache Line Size: 32 bytes Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 22 Region 0: Memory at 5a080000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=55mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold+) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME- Capabilities: [60] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable- Address: 0000000000000000 Data: 0000 Capabilities: [70] Express (v1) Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00 DevCap: MaxPayload 128 bytes, PhantFunc 0, Latency L0s <64ns, L1 <1us ExtTag- RBE- FLReset- DevCtl: Report errors: Correctable- Non-Fatal- Fatal- Unsupported- RlxdOrd- ExtTag- PhantFunc- AuxPwr- NoSnoop+ MaxPayload 128 bytes, MaxReadReq 128 bytes DevSta: CorrErr- UncorrErr- FatalErr- UnsuppReq- AuxPwr+ TransPend- LnkCap: Port #0, Speed unknown, Width x0, ASPM unknown, Latency L0 <64ns, L1 <1us ClockPM- Suprise- LLActRep- BwNot- LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; Disabled- Retrain- CommClk- ExtSynch- ClockPM- AutWidDis- BWInt- AutBWInt- LnkSta: Speed unknown, Width x0, TrErr- Train- SlotClk- DLActive- BWMgmt- ABWMgmt- Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel <?> Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link <?> Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel Lastly, I will attach the contents of my /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 file -- I am on 8.10. Sound was working fine till yesterday and after reboot, sound is very very low. It had happened last time and only reinstalling ubuntu fixed it.
