I have checked and I do not have openoffice.org-gcj installed. I am attaching a database file TennisTestDB.odb. This is, more or less, the database in use but I have had to delete all personal data leaving only one dummy entry Joe Bloggs. There are a number of tables of various sizes to try. During all the attempts to investigate this problem I once copied a table to the clipboard, it was just a small table and then tried to shut down OpenOffice Base. The idea was to see if it was possible to paste the data into another OO file. However it appears that just copying a table to the clipboard and nothing else is enough to freeze OpenOffice. OOBase was completely unresponsive and the process had to be killed. Unfortunately this episode did not produce an error log. Incidentally, I saw that Openjdk6 has a debug component. I have loaded this and run one OO crash since the debug installation. As far as I can see the error report is not greatly different to the others but I can send it if you wish. I have looked in other areas to see if the debug files are being put in a different place but I have not found any.
