I now get a new unrelated problem in Jaunty with gedit see bug #346293. In Intrepid I still get the error still with 2.6.27-11 kernel (latest updates today installed). Sebastien, you were correct in assuming that there was a missing directory. In my /root/.gnome2 directory there is no gedit directory, but there is a gedit-2 file. As soon as I made the new /root/.gnome2/gedit directory the fault was cured.
