Daniel, I don't know if this is still an issue in Ubuntu 8.10. As final, every day user I simple changed my backup software (rsync...). I suggest to investigate this bug deeply further, submitting it to upstream or something else.
In my opinion even a far possibility of unusable restore images worth it.
