...since the kernel from jaunty seems to be not new enough regarding drm and radeon, and as my pre-poster already wrote, I built drm.ko and radeon.ko modules using instructions http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3Ar6xx_r7xx_branch, and now it works.
