To add to the above: None of the keys offered in the keyboard options, including shift-rightalt, work as the compose key, with the exception of capslock, which does, and lessthangreaterthan, which I don't have.
The menu key doesn't work as the compose key, but then I can't get that to work in any keyboard layout I have tried. It always pops up a contextual menu.
