screem crashes for me, too.  fairly random as well and fairly often.
Bad enough that I am trying not to use the editor (although I like some
of the features so I wish it was more reliable)

screem version - 0.16.1-4.2
ubuntu 8.04.2

Let me know if I can provide further information to squash the bug...
