Ok, try as I might I cannot reproduce this so far (typical). I've tried with the SD card unmounted/removed before hibernate - resumed fine. SD mounted but no nautilus window open before hibernate - resumed fine. SD mounted and nautilus window open before hibernate (original scenario) - resumed fine.
In the last two the desktop icon for the SD card took about 20 seconds to appear and a nautilus auto-browsing window to open; this did not happen on the original occasion - I also recall that the disk was being hammered all the time the password screen was displayed originally (light hard on) but not since.
