The compiler is not faulty, but rather, more paranoid that stock
compilers.  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CompilerFlags for more details.
For the specific issues with the kernel, those warnings should be fixed
in upstream (why expend *printf CPU cycles on a string you don't want to
be %-interpolated?), as they might be security issues (though in most
cases they are just indications of minor bugs).
