Well, I'm not sure how to go about "reproducing" this problem. It is a constantly problem for me. If you could give me suggestions I'd be more than willing to try them.
As for alsamixer, it's behavior is the exact same. However, using alsamixer I was able to determine that the compression isn't into a 25% range, but rather a 50% range. "Volume 0" = 50%, "volume 100" = 100%. 50% and below are all 0.
